English Vocabulary: Food

If you work with me, you know I have a passion for language and helping my English students improve their English communication skills. I have another not-so-secret passion—food! Exploring all of the different cuisines the world has to offer is one of my greatest pleasures. Lately, I have been thinking a lot about the significance of how we describe flavors and food textures in different languages and how that affects English learners. Are lemons tart or simply sour? Are olives just bitter? How do we describe the nuances of different flavors in English? To tackle the unique challenges posed by teaching this type of vocabulary, I have created a beautiful visual teaching tool with the help of the talented Farrah Skeiky.

And, of course, since choosing between my two passions is not an option, we have combined them in this culture-hopping food collage. Feast on a cornucopia of dishes as you learn the words describing their unique flavors. Bon appétit!
