Navigating Panel Discussions in English for Non-Native Speakers: The Power of Transitional Phrases - Part Two: Context Matters
As an English and US Culture Coach, I often work with clients who have to operate in English in their careers. They know that their success very much depends on being able to function in their non-native language. This can cause a lot of stress, that’s why I see myself as not only a teacher but a coach; as someone who supports my clients during all their ups and downs and throughout all their challenges. So, in today’s article, part two of my article from the previous week, I will focus on transitional phases and how to employ them in different contexts.
Below we will learn more about how to masterfully use transitional phrases in English:
Context Matters
The context in which a panel discussion takes place plays a important role in determining the appropriate transitional phrases. A tech conference, for example, typically thrives on a dynamic, fast-paced atmosphere. Phrases need to be concise and precise to match the audience's expectations. In contrast, an academic conference often calls for a slower, more contemplative approach, emphasizing research and in-depth analysis.
Tech Conference:
"Let's get straight to the point with this one."
"In the rapidly evolving tech landscape, it's crucial to keep up."
"Our next topic is a game-changer in the tech world."
Academic Conference:
"In the context of our ongoing research, this aspect requires careful consideration."
"Exploring this subject further, we will find some intriguing points regarding…."
"To ensure we won’t overlook some of the open questions our audience will most certainly have, let's scrutinize this issue further."
English Transitional Phrases to Remember
Regardless of the atmosphere and context, some transitional phrases stand out as versatile and universally applicable:
"Let's pivot to..." This phrase smoothly transitions to a new topic, making it an excellent choice in both light and serious settings.
"Building on that..." Ideal for connecting ideas or expanding on a point, it works well in academic and tech discussions.
"In a similar vein..." This phrase indicates a thematic connection between topics, ensuring coherence in any discussion.
