English Phrasal Verbs at Restaurants

Hello English language learners! Today, we will learn about English phrasal verbs that will enrich your language skills. As an English coach, teacher, and US culture trainer, I always aim to teach you authentic English beyond textbooks. These phrasal verbs will help ESL learners in real life situations when you would otherwise feel confused by the vocabulary used outside of the classroom.

Phrasal Verb #1: "Dig in"

When your meal arrives, it's customary to invite others to start eating by saying "dig in." For example, you might say, "The food looks delicious—let's dig in!"

Phrasal Verb #2: "Top off"

If you enjoy a beverage with your meal and the server offers to "top off" your glass, it means they will refill it. You might hear, "Can I top off your water for you?"

Phrasal Verb #3: “Takeout" (a phrasal verb used as a noun here)

When you decide not to dine at the restaurant and instead want your food to go, you order “takeout". For instance, "I'm in a hurry, so I'll just order takeout today."

Phrasal Verb #4: "Settle up"

When it's time to pay the bill, it's common to use the phrase "settle up." For example, "Let's settle up, and I'll leave the tip."
