Essential English Phrasal Verbs for Shopping

Welcome to another post where we explore the English language and its rich vocabulary, specifically focusing on phrasal verbs used in the context of shopping. As an English coach, teacher, and US culture trainer, I always aim to help you elevate your English language proficiency and cultural fluency. Understanding the expressions below will enhance your English communication skills, making your interactions more fluid and natural. Whether you're an ESL learner or someone looking to master English, these phrasal verbs will not only boost your vocabulary but also help you sound more natural.

Phrasal Verb #1: "Pick out"

When shopping, the phrase "pick out" is commonly used to convey the act of selecting or choosing items. For example, you might say, "I need to pick out a new outfit for a party this weekend."

Phrasal Verb #2: "Try on"

Before making a purchase, it's often essential to "try on" clothes or accessories to ensure a proper fit. When shopping for apparel (clothing), you might say, "I like this dress, but I'll need to try it on before deciding."

Phrasal Verb #3: "Cash out"

To pay, you'll likely need to "cash out" or pay for your items. This term is commonly used at the checkout counter, for instance, "Let's cash out and head (go) home."

Phrasal Verb #4: "Look around"

Sometimes, when you're not sure what you're looking for, you might decide to "look around." This phrase implies browsing or exploring the store without a specific purchase in mind. For instance, "I don't need anything in particular; I'll just look around and see if anything catches my eye (my attention)."

Phrasal Verb #5: "Hold on to"

When you find an item you're interested in but aren't ready to purchase, you might ask the store attendant to "hold on to" it for you. This means reserving the item until you're prepared to buy. For example, "Can you hold on to this pair of shoes for me? I'll be back in 10 minutes."
